CEU eTD Collection (2022); Huggan, Georgia: Neocoloniality of Canada's Birth Evacuation

CEU Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2022
Author Huggan, Georgia
Title Neocoloniality of Canada's Birth Evacuation
Summary This thesis examines in detail anti-Indigenous racism within the Canadian healthcare system. Because of Canada’s history as a settler colonial state, there are still practices and policies in use which negatively affect Indigenous peoples. In this thesis I focus on a practice which disproportionately affects Indigenous women in rural areas, birth evacuation. Birthing people must often travel more than 200km to give birth and relocate, sometimes alone, for months prenatal and postpartum, taking them away from their community and support systems.
