Title | Analysis of Africa's Stock Exchange Brokerage Market |
Summary | Capital markets in Africa are still developing and there is no variety of products traded on majority of exchange markets. Brokerage markets are similarly not very competitive – except at South Africa’s Johannesburg stock exchange which is a very developed global exchange. The markets are dominantly stock exchanges and bond markets. To some markets which are well established and emerging namely; Nigeria Group Exchange, Egyptian Stock Exchange, Johannesburg and Ghana Stock Exchange – have a variety of securities traded and online trading is thriving. Whereas, for small developing markets like Rwanda Stock Exchange, Botswana Stock Exchange, Dar-es-salaam, Lusaka Stock Exchange, Namibia Stock Exchange are still limited to dealing in bonds and equities. The cost of investing to trade on stock exchange markets in Africa is substantially higher compared to developed global exchange markets. The largest portion of fees charged is comprised of stockbrokers’ commission. |
