Title Feeling the Nation: Romanian Nationalist Quasi-Feminist Women and the Road to Alternative Emancipation
Summary Faced with a democratic backsliding, characterised by the emergence of neonationalist and right-wing political parties which end up inside Parliaments, the issue of women’s voices and motivations when joining this new type of politics has become of academic salience. Most commonly, right-wing nationalist parties are seen as conservative, reactionary groups that embrace patriarchical and anti-feminist values. However, surprisingly, the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) political party turns out to have the highest gender quota in Romania, with more than one third of the National Board occupied by women and over 22% of women members, making it seemingly a women friendly political party in Romania. What makes those women engage in the party? Even more, how are these women negotiating their identity as women with the one of members of a nationalist right-wing party? In order to make sense of this puzzle, I propose the concept of nationalist quasi-feminism to explain the way the nationalist discourse and the feminism-related discourse in the party are interconnected. Based on the 8 interviews I have conducted with women politicians in AUR, I argue that they do a bricolage between nationalism and cardinal feminist beliefs which has possible implications and effects on Romanian politics, such as the instrumentalization of women and the catch-all strategy AUR embraces in preparation for 2024 elections.
