Title | COVID-19 Lockdown Measures' Effect On Traffic Accidents' Rate In the US |
Summary | This thesis investigates the impact of lockdown measures on road safety outcomes using a diff-in-diff framework. By analyzing accident rates within different time windows and controlling for state fixed effects and weekday variations, the study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of lockdown measures in mitigating accidents. The results indicate heterogeneous effects depending on the time window examined. Within a $\pm$ 26-day window, accident rates increased significantly for the treated group, highlighting potential unintended consequences of the lockdown measures. However, within a $\pm$ 14-day window, accident rates decreased significantly, indicating the positive impact of reduced traffic volume and stricter safety regulations. The effects became statistically insignificant within a $\pm$ 7-day window, suggesting higher variability and the influence of other factors. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted road safety measures during periods of reduced mobility. Policymakers should prioritize traffic enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and infrastructure improvements to enhance road safety. |
