| Title | Passing the Baton: A Comparative Look at Nazi-confiscated Art and the Spoils of Benin |
| Summary | This thesis tries to compare the restitution of Nazi-plundered art to the repatriation of the Benin bronzes from museums to states and individuals. Employing a comparative approach informed by the disciplines of History, Jewish Studies, and Cultural Heritage Studies, this study investigates the divergent paths taken in addressing historical injustices and returning cultural artifacts to their ‘rightful’ owners. Drawing extensively on contemporary newspapers as primary sources, this research aims to shed light on the complexities surrounding the restitution and repatriation processes, and tries to argue that a common methodology to approach return requests is not only feasible but also pragmatic. In part, the thesis also focuses on the role of non-state actors in bringing about change and the role of recommendations and guidelines in the absence of a uniform policy to deal with plundered art. By analysing the strategies and challenges faced by each subset, the thesis tries to offer a restorative justice as a possible solution to deal with all restitution requests. By considering the divergent paths taken in addressing these historical injustices, this study aims to contribute to broader discussions on restitution, repatriation, and the ethics of cultural heritage preservation. |
