Title Comparative Outlook of State-Mosque Relations: Modern Turkey and Iran
Summary The thesis offers insights into comparison of the relationship between the state and mosque in
Turkey and Iran. It investigates the question of why Turkey and Iran have varying political structures vis-a-vis the role of religion in the governance and politics although both countries followed similar paths towards modernization under Mustafa Kamal Ataturk and Reza Shah.
The Comparative Historical Analysis methodology is the main method of the thesis. As a part of the Comparative Historical Analysis, “Historical Institutionalism” is chosen method for the analysis of the relationship between the mosque and state in Turkey and Iran.
It is argued that historical continuity of institutions is less interrupted in Turkish case, while Iran’s case is fraught with more interruptions. Therefore, Turkey succeeded in subordinating the mosque under state authorities, while Iran failed to do so. However, the thesis also argues that the tradition of continuity in Turkish state institutions made its institutions more resillient, inclusive and flexible compared to Iranian ones. All these are considered of the fundamental reasons behind the question why the 1979 Revolution happened in Iran, while political instabilities did not produce similar rupture moment in Turkey.
