Title The 'Economic Weapon' Reframed: Assessing the Effectiveness of Sanctions in Response to the Russo-Ukrainian War from 2022
Summary This thesis examines the effectiveness of the current sanctions regime on Russia that was implemented following its invasion of Ukraine. I evaluate effectiveness through a novel framework that examines 1) the military channel, 2) the budgeting channel, 3) the ‘smart’ sanction channel and 4) the society channel. These channels considered jointly inform my evaluation of sanction effectiveness, and I argue that the sanctions have been effective to some extent, but that their effectiveness has been hampered by phenomena such as sanction evasion and the breakdown of ‘smart’ targeted sanctions.
