Title From Raves to Nightclubs: Understanding the Evolution of Electronic Dance Music Culture in Stoke-on-Trent and the UK from 1990 to 2000
Summary Situated between the fields of public history and musicology, this thesis seeks to understand how, after exploding in the UK during the late 1980s, electronic dance music (or EDM) culture evolved during the 1990s. A small city—Sto ke-on-Trent 014;located in England’s West Midlands region is used as the project’s central case study, though the thesis also considers the connections between the local, national and global scales. Indeed, as a broader, secondary research question, this project aims to understand why EDM has proven so long-lasting and successful.
