Title The Melting of Arctic Ice: The Case of Norwegian International Trade
Summary The Arctic ice sheet continues to melt because of climate change, presenting opportunities for new trade routes through the Arctic, the Northern Sea Route (NSR) being a prime example. Norway, like other Northern European countries is set to significantly benefit from this, in terms of increases in international trade. This thesis investigates this, utilising OLS regression to analyse the impact of the ice extent of the Arctic ice sheet, total gross registered tonnage transiting the NSR, number of ships transiting the NSR, and the navigability of the NSR, on the total trade in goods, of Norway. The study finds that there is a positive correlation between reductions in Arctic ice extent and total Norwegian trade. However due to insignificant results for the NSR measurements, it is not possible to conclude whether this is due to the ability to use the NSR for shipping, or whether reductions in ice extent simply increase other factors influencing Norwegian international trade.
