Title | The Gulag Microcosm: Life and Death at the White Sea-Baltic Combine of the NKVD, 1933-1941 |
Summary | The current work is devoted to the complex study of the Soviet forced labour camps, later referred to as “the GULAG.” In opposition to the traditional interpretation of labour camps as purely an instrument of prisoners’ economic exploitation and political repression it adopts an approach, which relies upon the concept of “social colonization.” Using archival sources and the methodology of social history it looks upon the Iosif Stalin’s GULAG as a colonizing institution. |
