Title | Moral Growth Through Art: The Cognitive and Moral Value of Perspectives |
Summary | Representational art provides rich cognitive takeaways in the form of practical, non-propositional knowledge acquired through engagement with perspectives manifested through both artistic form and content. Art offers perspectives that audiences interact with to interpret their own experiences, enabling them to adopt new viewpoints for understanding the world. These perspectives are deeply relevant to moral learning, offering salient information crucial to moral judgment, such as the characteristics of individuals, the significance of contextual elements, and the consequences of actions. Consequently, our engagement with art fosters cognitive richness in the form of practical knowledge, which carries significant moral relevance. This process allows for moral growth, demonstrating how the arts contribute uniquely to our understanding and development of ethical principles. |
