Title Safeguarding Futures: Human Rights And Planned Relocation In The Pacific Islands
Summary The effects of climate change, from extreme weather conditions to rising sea levels, are acutely felt across the globe, with small island nations in the Pacific Ocean being particularly vulnerable. These conditions disproportionately affect economically vulnerable communities, prompting discussions on adaptation measures ranging from domestic legal frameworks to international conventions. In some cases, mass migration and relocation emerge as the only viable long-term options. In light of this reality, this thesis will examine the Fijian Climate
Change Act, the Fijian Planned Relocation Guidelines, and the Solomon Islands Planned
Relocation Guidelines for their alignment with human rights standards in a relocation scenario. By reviewing past relocations and assessing lessons learned, the historical context will be cross-referenced with current frameworks to evaluate the relocation strategies.
