Title | Navigating the Depths: Exploring the Discourse within the Deep-Sea Mining Debate |
Summary | This thesis examines the narratives and discourse politics within the dialogue on deep-sea mining, focusing on how various actors conceptualize and communicate their perspectives on ocean sustainability and the green transition. Employing qualitative methodologies, including semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, this research gathers insights from diverse actors such as environmental NGOs, industry representatives, and scientific experts. The analysis identifies dominant narratives that portray DSM as both a potential threat to marine ecosystems and a necessary development for resource sustainability. It reveals a complex interplay of economic, environmental, and social factors that influence policy and governance in the sector. The findings underscore that while some narratives emphasize the economic benefits and technological advancements of DSM, others focus on the severe ecological risks and the necessity for stringent regulatory frameworks. This study contributes to the understanding of how DSM is positioned within the broader discourse of sustainable ocean use and the green transition. It suggests that effective governance in DSM requires a balanced consideration of both technological capabilities and environmental precautions. The thesis concludes with recommendations for policymakers, advocating for a more inclusive approach to stakeholder engagement and narrative integration to ensure the sustainable development of DSM. |
