Author Mehta, Stuti
Title Fenced In, Fenced Away: Building a good life in a gated community in Bengaluru
Summary Based on four months of ethnographic fieldwork in a gated community in Bangalore (officially Bengaluru), India, this thesis investigates the good life at an elite residential site. It finds the presence of a casteless, neoliberal subjectivity that invisibilises the relationship of the individual to structural factors that bestow privilege upon and mediate the engagement of residents with the city. Noting the apolitical morality of such a subject, the thesis notes a sudden intrusion of right-wing politics into the gates and opens up space for investigating links between a privileged positionality and Hindutva.
