Title Picking Up the Tab: Exploring the implications of China's geoeconomic power in the post-pandemic international system
Summary This capstone project examines China’s use of economic tools and power to advance its geopolitical influence and goals within this post-pandemic international system. This specific application of economic influence is increasingly described as geoeconomic power. This project includes an overview of geoeconomics, a summary of China’s rapid economic development in the late 20th and early 21st century, and a close analysis of two different case studies: China’s investment in the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka in the 2010s; and China’s use of its currency as a tool for geoeconomics. Utilizing this analysis and geoeconomic theoretical frameworks, this capstone project aims to explore how China has created and is exploiting opportunities to leverage its geoeconomic power internationally and to position itself as a new leader in the post-pandemic international system.
