Title Upholding Rights and Ensuring Safety: An Advisory Brief on University Responses to Pro-Palestinian Encampments at Columbia University and FU Berlin
Summary This advisory brief is targeted at university administrations, particularly that of Columbia University in New York City and Freie Universität (FU) Berlin. It analyzes the pro-Palestinian student encampments at both universities as well as the responses to them, outlining the shortcomings of said responses. While Columbia rather employed administrative consequences for student activists, FU's collaboration with local and federal police forces caused more frequent and severe physical harm. In response to the key analytical findings, this paper proposes a more functional strategy for encountering such encampments that builds on safe campus environments, mutual negotiations and communication between activists and university administrations, as well as the initiation of additional discourse spaces for students, faculty, and other university staff.
