Title | Regional Trends in the Context of the European Green Transition: Financial Development and Governance |
Summary | The thesis aims to assess regional trends of governance and financial development about the green transition. The European Union faces one of its biggest challenges: the execution of the European Green Deal. The academic discussion raises the question of whether the market-based solution will be the better one or whether the involvement of the national governments is necessary, too. The thesis introduces the general discussion around the issues and the shortcomings of the available data set. The aim is to uncover whether financial development or governance is more impactful on environmental degradation at the EU and major regional levels. The author tests the hypothesis of Afzal et al. (2022), whose work is based on the Environmental Kuznets Curve, to see whether it fits the EU member states in contrast to their general European focus. Further, the thesis inquires about the impact of governance on financial development and environmental factors with OLS panel data regression based on primary data for the EU27 countries for the period 2000-2022. The results disapprove the findings of Afzal et al. (2022) and support recommendations for further and more comprehensive governmental involvement to foster and finance the green transition. |
