| Title | The Impact of Remittances on Health Outcomes and Expenditures in Selected Countries |
| Summary | The volume of remittances has been increasing rapidly, emerging as one of the largest sources of income in developing world. Some of the Post-Soviet and Eastern European countries are part of this trend. Moreover, health sector in some of the countries of the region remain underdeveloped. Therefore, this paper investigated whether the high volume of remittances sent into these regions contribute to improved health outcomes. Data for constructing the econometric model was obtained from the World Bank for the period 2000–2022. Fixed Effects was chosen as the estimation method. Countries were categorized based on the proportion of remittances received: high remittance receiving countries formed the first group, while low remittance receiving countries in the second group were used for comparative purposes. Results of the study found to differ for two groups; in high remittance group, remittances are found to be associated with better health outcomes, however remittances found to have no any correlation with health expenditures. In contrast in low remittance group, remittances are found to be insignificant in relation to health outcomes except small correlation with life expectancy, but significant in relation to total health expenditures. Keywords: Remittances, Health outcomes, Health expenditures, Fixed Effects, Panel data analysis. |
