Title Capital and Competitiveness A Sectoral Study of Venture Capital and Private Equity, and Export Advantage in India
Summary While venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) are broadly recognised for their roles in driving innovation and productivity, their impact on international trade performance, especially within emerging economies remains underexplored. This study examines the relationship between venture capital and private equity investment as well as India’s export competitiveness measured through revealed comparative advantage (RCA). Using a harmonised panel dataset of sector-level RCA and VC/PE inflows from 2011 to 2022, this research employs fixed effects and first-difference econometric models, including sector specific-regressions and interaction terms to examine heterogeneity between sectors. No strong or consistent evidence is found that VC/PE investment has a significant influence on RCA across most model specifications. Notably, domestic manufacturing appears to be strongly linked to RCA improvements within select sectors, which highlights the role of domestic industrial capacity and supply chain integration. Though VC and PE play important roles in domestic economic development, these findings suggest their impact on export competitiveness is limited.
