Title Navigating Two Systems: Dutch Joint Ventures in the Perestroika Soviet Union, 1987-1991
Summary In 1987, the Soviet Union introduced a policy which allowed foreign companies to operate in the country and own property for the first time since the 1920s. The legal structure which made this possible was the Joint Venture, in which a foreign company and a Soviet enterprise formed a new company together. Where previous research has focussed on large American companies such as McDonalds and Pizza Hut, this thesis instead engages with smaller enterprises from a smaller country, the Netherlands. It explores which factors were vital in these Joint Ventures’ success or failure, and argues that although the Soviet economic system and the Perestroika reforms formed a major barrier for entry, they were not an insurmountable obstacle. It was rather the personalities of the people involved, the relationship between the two partners, and the capabilities of the Soviet partner which determined the fate of Dutch Joint Ventures.
