Title Challenges of Ageing Societies. Essays about Health at Older Ages and Pension Attitudes.
Summary This paper-based dissertation relates to two main challenges of the welfare states in ageing societies: supporting old-age health and providing adequate old-age bene fits in a sustainable and socially legitimate manner. Using individual level data from a harmonized survey covering European countries, and from a conjoint survey experiment embedded in a public opinion survey in Hungary, we explore two main topics. First, we analyze the link between financial difficulties during individuals' active years and health two to three decades later, in older age in Europe. Second, we assess public opinion on fair pensions and the drivers of these preferences, and assess the degree to which these preferences and redistributive considerations are represented in Hungary.
