Title Media Freedom and Democracy: Does Culture Matter?
Summary The importance of the free and independent media for the emergence and consolidation of democracy is widely accepted, both by academia and practitioners. The factor the importance of which for democracy and free media is not so unanimously accepted is culture. What is the relationship between culture in society and democracy, culture and freedom of the press? Can the differences in culture among the countries explain the differences in the way institutions are built and perform in society? In order to answer these questions, the data for 74 countries is statistically analyzed. The findings suggest that such cultural factors as power distance in society, level of uncertainty avoidance and individualism have a significant impact on the level of press freedom and democracy; moreover the cultural profile of a country significantly influences its level of democratic.
