Title PUBLIC DEBATES ON THE COMMUNIST PAST DURING LITHUANIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN 1993 AND 1997: NARRATING ITS PAST AND FUTURE
Summary The aim of this thesis is to analyze public debates on the communist past during Lithuanian presidential elections in 1993 and 1997 and to reveal how different memory groups, namely, native opposition, former communists, and diaspora members redefine their identities and search for a new place in the post-communist Lithuania. The debates are followed in the two largest Lithuanian newspapers: Lietuvos Rytas and Respublika. In this study, it will be revealed that the conciliatory dealing with the Lithuanian communist past does not reflect the choice of a policy of “closing the books” but rather symbolizes an emergence of a new political culture of dialogue and tolerance.
