In the wake of dissolution of Soviet Union and declaration of independence by former soviet republic of Georgia ethnic conflicts occurred between ethnic Georgians and ethnic Abkhazians and Ossetians of former soviet republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia which fell under the jurisdiction of territorial boundaries of newly independent Georgia. Russia was actively involved in the conflicts as mediator and peacekeeper.
