| Title | A Call to Arms: Nationalism and Paramilitary Violence in Northern Ireland and Kosovo During the Twentieth Century |
| Summary | This thesis examines the rise of nationalism and the formation of paramilitary groups in Kosovo and Northern Ireland throughout the twentieth century. Using a comparative approach, this work examines issues of nationalism, paramilitarism and conflict through the lens of modernism and argues that paramilitary groups such as the Kosovo Liberation Army and the Provisional Irish Republican Army serve as a continuation of a violent struggle which has existed for almost the whole entirety of the twentieth century and still continues to this day. This work seeks to examine how issues such as social inequality and oppressive political regimes resulted in an outbreak of violence and wide spread support for armed resistance. Group dynamics of paramilitary units are examined including a discussion concerning ideology, splits in formation, and recruitment. Ultimately, this work argues that paramilitary groups were all part of a larger modern movement which looked to the past for tradition and to the future for the hope of an independent nation. |
