| Title | Diplomacy, Terrorism, and Espionage: Extremist Croatian Separatists and Australian Cold War Relations with Yugoslavia 1963-1979 |
| Summary | Separatist Croatian terrorist organisations present in Australia were a dominating element of the Australian-Yugoslavian Cold War relationship. These Croatian separatists became part of a unique diplomatic entanglement between the two counties which developed despite the geographic distance between them. This dissertation demonstrates that the entanglement of Croatian separatism into the domestic and international spheres of Australian policy created a heightened awareness of Cold War relations with Yugoslavia, and this enabled Yugoslav authorities to extend sovereignty outside of their borders in an attempt to silence dissenting political opposition on Australian soil. Utilising a range of Australian Government sources this thesis takes an entangled history and a cross-disciplinary approach to make an original contribution to the fields of history and international relations. It highlights the utility of an entangled historical approach by demonstrating that it would be impossible to comparatively investigate Australian-Yugoslavian Cold War diplomacy isolated from the topic of Croatian separatist terrorism. The ongoing global problem of diasporic terrorism means the findings of this dissertation are topical and provide a base for comparative applied historical analysis. |
