Title Governing Nuclear Ambiguity at Home and Abroad: A Critical Analysis of Israel's Unique Bargain With the Bomb
Summary In 1967 Israel managed to secretly cross the nuclear threshold and become the Middle East’s first and thus far only nuclear-weapon state. Over the years, Israel’s strategy of total nuclear secrecy evolved into a unique policy of ‘nuclear ambiguity’ (neither confirming nor denying the existence of nuclear weapons), providing the country with an existential nuclear deterrent, without making it (too) explicit, a position that could invite sanctions or encourage a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. My thesis explores how Israel maintains its exceptional nuclear policy both at home and abroad.
