Title | Governing Nuclear Ambiguity at Home and Abroad: A Critical Analysis of Israel's Unique Bargain With the Bomb |
Summary | In 1967 Israel managed to secretly cross the nuclear threshold and become the Middle East’s first and thus far only nuclear-weapon state. Over the years, Israel’s strategy of total nuclear secrecy evolved into a unique policy of ‘nuclear ambiguity’ (neither confirming nor denying the existence of nuclear weapons), providing the country with an existential nuclear deterrent, without making it (too) explicit, a position that could invite sanctions or encourage a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. My thesis explores how Israel maintains its exceptional nuclear policy both at home and abroad. |
