| Title | From Havana to Belgrade: The Changing Fate of the Non-Aligned Movement in the Yugoslav Press 1979 - 1989 |
| Summary | The focus of the thesis is on the Yugoslav media’s changing perception of the country’s foreign affairs. I will specifically explore the media representation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) from 1979 to 1989 – analyzing the press coverage of the NAM summits in Havana (1979) and Belgrade (1989). In that way, I will describe the perception of non-aligned politics in Yugoslavia that changed in the media over the span of ten years. The thesis consists of two thematic parts. In the first part, I establish the theoretical basis for discussing the status of the media in Yugoslavia, explaining its legal and political framework. Additionally, I explain how the media were guided and constrained in their representation of Yugoslav international relations, particularly the Non-Aligned Movement. Part two presents my research on the two NAM summits – the 6th summit in Havana in 1979, and the 9th summit in Belgrade in 1989. Here I show my findings regarding the press coverage of the summits in the daily newspapers Večernji list, Vjesnik, and Borba. The aim is to understand how the press portrayed the two summits, within the context of the transformation of the Yugoslav media during these ten years. By comparing the three newspapers, representing the Croatian and Serbian republics, I also aim to show how these representations reflect the momentous changes in Yugoslavia in both domestic and international terms. |
