| Title | Not by TASS Alone: Reporting Khrushchev's Trip to America, 1959 |
| Summary | In this thesis, I argue that the Soviet international propaganda system experienced a significant change in its structure, performance, and personnel in the late 1950s. Using the archival materials from the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History, and Open Society Archive, I investigate the reasons behind this shift. More importantly, I look at the role of the network of journalists and diplomats who were in Khrushchev’s close circle and had access to means of changing the propaganda system. Studying the role of these individuals, my research sheds new light on the agency of Soviet officials, their methods of cooperation and coordination of the extensive web of organizations involved in propaganda activities abroad. This study is exemplified by Khrushchev’s trip in 1959, which became a turning point for propagandists. |
