Title Crisis, Memory, and Change: The Philosephardic Reinterpretation of Spanish National Identity
Summary This thesis analyzes the development of an unorthodox idea about Spanish identity that arose at the end of the 19th century: the idea that, because of racial mixing that took place centuries ago in the Iberian peninsula, Sephardic Jews should actually be considered Spaniards. This broadening of traditional views of Spanishness to include and encompass Jewishness was also accompanied by a wider movement to “repatriate” Sephardic Jews to Spain, where it was hoped they would bring about a renewal of Spanish society. It is argued here that both of these developments were linked to a widespread perception of crisis among Spanish élites. Furthermore, by using process tracing to look more closely at the causes of these sentiments, one can arrive at a better understanding of how collective identities and memories change over time.
