Title Russia, Austria, and Old Believers: The Entanglements of Religious and Foreign Policies in 1846-1856
Summary The present study explores the establishment of a new ecclesiastical institution by the Russian Old Believers and the entanglements of this case with interstate relations in the mid-19th century. Under the oppression of the Russian imperial administration, the Old Believers (a branch of Eastern Orthodoxy split from the Russian State Church) resorted to institution-building (the conversion of a bishop from the Constantinople Church) with an organizational center in Austrian Bukovina. The consequences of this event consisted of diplomatic negotiations and repressions, and their dynamics were profoundly influenced by the trends in interstate relations.
