Title Unrealized And Unrealizable: Architectural Projects And Ideas In Interwar Belgrade And Zagreb
Summary The core of my PhD research is the idea of shifting the research focus away from the results of the architectural process to the process itself. Through analyzing unrealizable, rejected and unimplemented projects, I intend to reveal how the architectural process was organized: from formulating architectural ideas through selection mechanisms to different stages of project implementation. My approach implies that the architectural process and urban planning could be considered as a chain of proposals, debates and decisions, in which different actors were involved (architects, their community, state and municipal authorities, urban elites, the general public). The actors had their preferences or architectural visions, and different opportunities to promote their ideas and influence the decision-making process. My main hypothesis is that lack of understanding and effective communication between actors affected the implementation of architectural projects. On the one hand, the divergence between directions of architectural searches and demands of state institutions prevented the initiation of projects (more likely in the case of Zagreb); on the other hand, even if each of the institutions involved in the architectural process fulfilled its tasks, communication problems “broke” the chain of decision makings.
